IRT tests show V-Nova PERSEUS® Compression is ready for Contribution prime time
  • Globally recognised broadcast technology institute IRT tests V-Nova’s PERSEUS® video compression technology
  • IRT results show that PERSEUS Contribution Solution performs substantially better than JPEG2000 in Contribution and touches the quality of H.264-Intra-based production codecs
  • IRT tests are an important step for the long term commercial viability of PERSEUS for Contribution

V-Nova Ltd., a leading provider of video compression solutions, today announced that IRT (Institut für Rundfunktechnik) has successfully carried out first video quality tests of V- Nova’s PERSEUS® video compression solution in Contribution applications.

The IRT evaluated the V-Nova’s technology against benchmarks set by JPEG2000 in Contribution and production codecs such as AVC Intra Class 100 and XAVC-Intra 100 at comparable bit-rates. The results, based on a mixture of objective and subjective evaluations, confirm a substantial improvement compared to JPEG2000 and a quality that challenges H.264- intra-based production codecs. The tests were performed on HD interlaced content (1080i/25), which represents the large majority of content being acquired today.

“The IRT has always been at the forefront of modern media and the technology innovations needed to move our industry forward. Testing PERSEUS is important to enable our broadcasting, media, communications- engineering and IT clients to have a quantitative basis to assess the potential of this new technology” says Dr. Rainer Schäfer, General Manager TV, IRT.

“The tests by the globally respected IRT technology institute shows that PERSEUS provides commercially valuable increases in efficiency over contribution compression codes AVC-Intra and JPEG2000 at the most widely adopted HD format today, 1080i”, commented Guido Meardi, V-NOVA CEO and co-Founder. “Due to PERSEUS hierarchical nature, we know that the benefits are even larger at higher resolutions such as UHD/4K and higher frame rates such as 1080p50/60. We will continue supporting any independent validation to prove PERSEUS many benefits.”

“We welcome thorough compression performance evaluations from respected institutions like IRT”, commented Guido Meardi, V-NOVA CEO and co- Founder. “These results, combined with the many other benefits of

PERSEUS, such as Continuous Hierarchical Adaptability – which guarantees graceful degradation in peak complexity frames –translate to large bitrate reductions and the real commercial value that our customers are seeing. Due to PERSEUS hierarchical nature, we know that the benefits are even larger at higher resolutions such as UHD/4K and higher frame rates such as 1080p50/60.”

PERSEUS by V-Nova is an advanced video compression technology that enables operators to differentiate their products and services, increase market penetration, and provide otherwise undeliverable services. PERSEUS® is based on the principles underlying human vision to deliver significant improvements in compression, picture quality, processing speed and power consumption.

V-Nova’s PERSEUS tests at the IRT have been supported by V-Nova’s partner Wellen+Nöthen, one of the world’s leading system architects of broadcast IT. Wellen+Nöthen already enables broadcasters and service providers to trial and deploy PERSEUS-enabled products in Contribution applications.

“Proving the technology with the most respected organisations in broadcasting is fundamental in moving PERSEUS from its award-winning NAB 2015 debut to an established commercial “reality” at IBC.” added Eric Achtmann, V-Nova Executive Chairman & co-Founder. “Video contribution has a history of being a proving ground for the efficiency, power and flexibility of new video technologies, so it’s exciting news that the IRT institute agrees that our PERSEUS technology and our Contribution Solution really do deliver important video contribution benefits”
